Twenty-five years ago today, Patricia Highsmith—garrulous author of The Talented Mr. Ripley, Strangers on a Train, and The Price of Salt, among other great works—died at the age of 74. I like to think she’d get a kick out of the fact that Tom Ripley is still consistently listed among the greatest literary characters of all time—and also that some people out there just don’t

The talented mr ripley book review

Though my reading pattern does consist of juggling multiple books at once, Catch-22 alone has probably made me start more than 10 books just by picking it up and putting it down. Ah well, when I finally do write a review of Catch-22, I shall analyse why that is so. For now, let me focus on The Talented Mr Ripley. The book is able to give a background into Tom’s upbringing, painting a turbulent childhood thanks to his Aunt and the loss of his parents. The film, despite criticism over being a shade long, has no time for explanation which perhaps detracts from the level of sympathy the book is able to induce. -REVIEW ESSAY: Patricia Highsmith at 100: How the author’s chilling stories of murder have fascinated filmmakers for decades: Highsmith’s murderous con artist in The Talented Mr Ripley has become so well-known that he is often a point of reference for any real-life killers with a smattering of charm.

Displaying impressive talent indeed, “The Talented Mr. Ripley” is a mostly intoxicating and involving tale of intrigue and crime that loses its stride somewhat in the home stretch.

Erin and Paul review two films about babyfaced con artists: Anthony Minghella's 1999 psychological thriller THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY

However, that is technically not part of this review, and I give Mr Ripley & his Talents a solid 4 stars. The Talented Mr Ripley movie (1999) starring Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow was based on the first in a series of Tom Ripley books. The movie follows the book quite closely in part but the book's plot is far too complex for all the detail to be included in a 139 minute movie. “The Talented Mr. Ripley” evidently conceives the search for fulfillment and identity.
